Mayo  Clinic’s use of social media was highlighted this morning in a story on ABC’s Good Morning America (see the story). The story’s focus was on medical organizations using Twitter, but that’s just one of several social media tools Mayo Clinic is using to share in-depth medical information and to gather communities of Mayo Clinic employees, patients and their families. ABC Good Morning America Features Mayo-Olmsted Asthma Effort

In its On Call segment this morning, ABC’s Good Morning America featured an innovative program in Olmsted County as part of its “Cutting Edge Medicine” series.

The children of Rochester, Minn., are struggling with a large-scale health problem.

“Twenty-five percent of children say they have been told by their physician they have asthma,” said Mary Wellik, of Olmsted County Public Health. “We’re looking to see what we can do as a community to reduce the burden of asthma on these children and their families.”

So the city is undergoing a radical experiment along with the help of the Mayo Clinic, public school nurses, parents and the county health department, to create a new model to care for asthmatic children.
